A long process of Turkey’s accession to the European Union
A recurring bone of contention is whether the country is sufficiently attuned to Western norms and values. Historically Turkey has been a melting-pot of civilizations, standing with one foot in Europe, the other in the Eastern world.
Those who oppose Turkey joining the EU claim that this is an awkward balancing act that endangers the stability of the country and even bears the risk of Turkey turning into a hard-line Islamic state. Those in favor of Turkey’s membership, on the other hand, believe the country can play a unique role, functioning as a bridge between two worlds, comparable to Constantinople in the old days.
Turkey itself no longer appears to be interested in the outcome of this debate, and is already busy building bridges, not just westwards but predominantly eastwards as well, exploring contacts with the Arab world, Russia and former Soviet Republics.
